- This antibody recognises complement component 7 (C7), a 110 kDa glycoprotein present in the blood serum. Note that this antibody does not recognise membrane bound complement membrane attack complex. This antibody inhibits lysis of sensitised sheep erythrocytes.

- The factor I domain of C7 binds the C terminus of the C5 alpha-chain, acting as a membrane anchor. This enables the assembly of the complement membrane attack complex (MAC) and consequent complement lytic activity.
