- C-reactive protein is an acute phase protein, synthesized in the liver. Its molecular weight is about 140,000. It occurs in serum of healthy men in low concentrations, <1.2 µ g/ml. In cases of bacterial infection, surgical trauma and Hodgkins disease, he concentration is highly increased. It may reach values of 0.5 mg/ml. Freund’s complete adjuvant is used in the first step of the immunization procedure.

- In precipitating techniques as immunoelectrophoresis and single or double radial immunodiffusion to identify the presence of C-reactive protein in human plasma or other body fluids or to determine its concentration. The presence of non precipitating antibodies has not been assayed. This does not exclude the use of the antiserum in more sensitive non-precipitating antibody-binding techniques if proper controls are included.
