Background: Interleukin 16 is a pro-inflammatory pleiotropic cytokine. Its precursor, pro-interleukin-16 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the IL16 gene.This gene was discovered in 1982 at Boston University by Dr. David Center and Dr. William Cruikshank.
