Prostaglandin E1 is a major regulatory prostaglandin that exerts most of its biological activity through modulation of cAMP concentration. This modulating activity can be both inhibitory and stimulatory in nature depending on the tissue under examination. PGE1 has also been shown to be a potent vasodilator, inhibit platelet aggregation, and regulate protein kinase C (PKC). This broad biological activity yields a multitude of physiological effects on: gastric acid secretion, erectile function, neoangiogenicism, and immune system function just to name a few. .
