Risperidone is a second-generation antipsychotic drug that works by affecting the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain, particularly serotonin, through antagonism of D2 receptors and blockade of serotonin receptors like 5HT2A. Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1993, risperidone has since become a widely prescribed medication for managing psychotic symptoms and stabilizing mood in individuals with psychiatric disorders.
