Along with a low thylakoid lumen pH and the presence of de-epoxidized xanthophylls, PsbS is necessary for photoprotective thermal dissipation of excess absorbed light energy in plants, measured as non-photochemical quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence. Synonymes: NPQ4 (NONPHOTOCHEMICAL QUENCHING). -
