- Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) andneurturin (NTN) are two structurally related, potent neurotrophic factors thatplay key roles in the control of neuron survival and differentiation. GFRa-2 isa member of the GDNF receptor family. It is a glycosylphosphatidyl-inositol(GPI)-linkedcell surface receptor for both GDNF and NTN, and mediates activation of the RETtyrosine kinase receptor. This encoded protein acts preferentially as areceptor for NRTN compared to its other family member, GDNF family receptoralpha 1. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/gene/2675
