Metabotropic Glutamate Receptor GRM7 binds L-glutamate, the major excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, which activates both ionotropic and metabotropic glutamate receptors. GRM7 is highly concentrated at presynaptic terminals and is thought to play an important role in the modulation of glutamatergic synaptic transmission by effecting presynaptic inhibition of glutamate release. The metabotropic glutamate receptors are a family of G protein-coupled receptors that have been divided into 3 groups on the basis of sequence homology, putative signal transduction mechanisms, and pharmacologic properties. Group III includes GRM4, GRM6, GRM7, and GRM8 receptors, which are linked to inhibition of the cyclic AMP signaling cascade. Five mRNA variants of GRM7 have been described, most of the variants are expressed in brain and retina, although there are non-neuronal variants that may have different functional properties. GRM7 has been reported to be expressed in active zones of presynaptic axon terminals in various regions of the brain, eye, and spinal cord. Caution: GLUR7 refers to Ionotropic Glutamate Receptor 7, not to Metabotropic Glutamate Receptor 7 (mGLUR7).Synonyms: GPRC1G, MGLUR7, Metabotropic glutamate receptor 7
